Characters in order of appearance
Source: 1851 census unless different source shown.
Initially I have not shown individuals that appear in the 1851 census and may not have been in Piddington or in the households shown in 1850. These characters will appear as the diary progresses and are shown in red. Some notes relate to the 1841 census. Ages shown in 1841 are particularly unreliable. There was a tendency to round ages to the nearest 5-year break: 65,70 etc., Henry Jordan Old Henry
Phoebe Coles married Henry Jorden at Launton 27 March 1817 With the diary moving to 1851, John and Ruth now added as they may not have been there in 1850. Recorded as visitors. Ruth is actually Henry & Phoebe's daughter. John and Ruth were married 2nd December 1850. At that time Ruth's father, Henry Jordan, was recorded as a labourer. John Reynolds Old John & Ann
Question: Should we assume Ann is John’s sister? Married a Haynes and then returned home after his death? Some Reynolds close to Old John
Old Topsy Turvey & Matilda
Yes, I checked the census record. Sophia is recorded as Topsy's wife. Topsy is a worthy challenger to Old Jim Parker! A complicated task to determine relationships between 8 other Turveys in 2 main households and also recorded lodgers and servants. John Freeman (Cowleys)
William Parrott (Wheelwright and Carpenter)
Jane is in fact 9 years old and is William and Sarah's granddaughter. Jane's mother died in Brill when Jane was just 2 years old. Caleb Rogers
Rhoda Rogers

Susannah's husband is John Walker who is still living with the rest of the Walker family.

William Bottrell Billy Bottle
I now have a fairly comprehensive picture of the Bottrell family and some of their ancestors. I will publish this in due course. Their daughter Sarah was not at home in Piddington on the day of the census. I have not been able to trace her on that date. Thomas Brown Manor Farm

Also in the village we have two Sulston farming families. Young "Farmer Sulston" and "Very Old Farmer Sulston". I expect we will be hearing more of these in the diary. William Hillsdon, Blacksmith
Michael Griffin, Corball Farm
James Griffin, Muzwell Farm
"Wiggins the Shoe Makers"
There are a number of other Wiggins in this household and the next one listed. I will try and establish exactly how they are all related. "Dumbletons the Grocers"
